Presidential Executive Order 10/12/2017
Today President Trump signed an executive order that will be the first step to dismantle the Affordable Care Act. The order will task the administration with creating policies that will increase competition and improve the overall quality of health care. In his statement, President Trump said the order would “cost the United States government virtually nothing and people will have great great healthcare.”
What May the Order do?
The intent of the order is to expand the accessibility of association health plans. Association health plans are groups of employers in the same trade that join together and are then able to purchase plans that are typically only available to large employers. With this order, Trump will try and expand their availability and remove the requirement to adhere to the Affordable Care Act laws. The main way this will lower healthcare costs would be by excluding the Affordable Care Act’s 10 essential health benefits. President Trump directed the administration to also develop rules that would allow short-term medical coverage to be offered by commercial insurers to individuals.
